Kuba Inspiration

Participants will learn about the pattern work of Kuba textiles for creative inspiration and spark. These woven and embroidered fabrics are made from raffia, a palm fiber. The designs are bold and geometric, often using black or brown colors to contrast with the natural, undyed raffia. Kuba Kingdom, which between the 17th and early 20th centuries was one of Africa's largest and most powerful societies, in what is today the southeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Participants will explore drawing Kuba inspired patterns on wet media paper with black permanent ink pens. Then select drawings to add color with watercolor paint. After working with drawing and painting participants will create smallish felt flags/banners that incorporate bold geometric shapes and symbols. No previous experience required.
